Every old drunk Was once a young one having fun Out on the town just balling Don’t wonder what may come They don’t wanna know But I saw a ghost just last night Alone aching on the corner It sure does give a fright Never would imagine there would be no pretty bow To wrap you up and night and lightly let you know That you can do no wrong when in fact you’ve lost your way Somewhere in a destiny that took but never paid Every lover once Gave with all their heart Before it came down hard Tore the place apart You can’t know what’s needed When young and on your way There’s a lesson out there waiting Every promise must be paid CHORUS CODA: Give it all, give it all, give it all, give it all Live it out to the fullest, it’s never too late To hit the breaks or gun it to the 5th Rust in your tarnished glory, inspire with scary stories But there’s no time for glory hanging from a wire x 2

Everything is a life Everything is a dream Everything ain’t always what is seems Everyone is a child Everyone is a fool Everyone forgets the golden rule Everybody wants to be something Everybody holding on to a dream We’re all sharing the same stream Some people want to be alone Other people needing a home But we’re all carved from the same stone Bound by fear Or torn by hate Instinctively we separate But we’re bound by blood We’re bound by flesh We’re bound to love beyond the test CHORUS

Alone in a cave Alone in a room Sitting quietly Alone with you Wondering What words are right? To stop this runaway Of a freight train night Treachery, treachery It nearly killed me Your treachery Treachery, treachery It nearly killed me My treachery An ecstasy Wrapped in pain Won’t you help me Get off this train

Secret Place 03:16
You were the first To stir my heart So young and naïve It’s hard to believe Questing for a pleasure Looking for a sign Everything was flooded By a great design Lay you down on the ground It was dark and I was scared Simply needing to touch you To breathe your honey hair The moon was our witness Through her I saw your face Reflecting back all my need In our secret place I just never knew It could happen like that Love was a stranger Perceived as a trap Not until you were gone Could I recognize There was something I loved Living I your eyes Desperate and cold But burning with fire Nearly out of control With a strange desire It’s gotta happen now Any way any how We’ll find a secret place Where we can be alone

Hot Potato 01:48
Promises, promises, cross my heart You don’t wanna know me sweetheart Hot Potato, Hot Potato, one, two, three Before you get burned you better let go of me Every time I look at you I start to feel a little bit crazy Every time we kiss I feel a fire that is burning, burning And I don’t wanna have to tell you that I’ve lost my way After you’ve attached yourself and can’t see clearly I don’t wanna have to be the man you gonna lose After you been hanging round paying all the dues Inky, binky, soda pop this has got to stop The sea is steady rising and the boat begins to rock Row your boat, row your boat quickly to the shore These waves are rising, can’t take no more

I Wonder Why 04:06
It’s so strange But I know those eyes From before this time I wonder why You don’t recognize You don’t recognize mine It’s so strange To feel the melt Deep brown warm shine I wonder why You don’t feel mine You don’t recognize Loose lips sink ships Should I expose my position? Thereby risking it All to a fleeting chance And triggering a view Into the vision Drawing me unto you It’s so big Bigger than this moment It’s so good Can’t help wanting to hold it Coda: Forever, forever How can one feel destiny? While the other one Feels nothing

Cold Ashes 05:21
The fire has died & I've gone to bed But the flames still dance within my head I cannot feel sorry if you choose to sit there With the cold ashes shivering in the air The flames burst hot red white and blue So much distance they kept us warm through WIth so many obstacles the fire still grew But not destined to burn forever Would it do any good to ask of you now How much wood was gathered from the sweat of your brow? And even though my heart too burned bright Just what was the nature of my light? These questions I'm relieved have lost relevence For our sins in love we've felt penitence We can't ask for salvation if we don't repent And relive the warmth in our memories Move away, move away from the hearth my dear There is no more warnth to be found there Don't grow old & tired holding on to your fear Nor let the cold ashes gray your reckless hair

about

Return to Roots is the sophomore release from the Bay Area singer song-writer, Splintered Tree. This a musical travelogue that was recorded DIY and very LO-FI while traveling through Europe. The simplicity of the recordings belies the complexity and depth of the songwriting. This is a mostly quiet, beautiful collection of ballads recorded au natural which allows the ambience of the various locations visited to sneak into the recordings and lend their own voice to the songs.
